In anul 1969 cei doi s-au casatorit si au inregistrat impreuna celebra piesa “Give peace a chance”. Prima lor actiune concertata a avut loc in luna de miere la Amsterdam, cand au lansat campania “Bed in for Peace”.
Cei doi au realizat doua campanii “Bed in for peace” , una in Amsterdam si alta in Montreal, protestand impotriva razboiului si militand pentru pace.
La multi ani dupa moartea lui John, Yoko se adresa tuturor militantilor din lumea intreaga printr-o scrisoare astfel: “Dear Friends, In 1969, John and I were so naïve to think that doing the “Bed in” would help change the world. Well, it might have. But at the time, we didn’t know. It was good that we filmed it, though. The film is powerful now. What we said then could have been said now. In fact, there are things that we said then in film, which may give some encouragement and inspiration to the activists of today. Good luck to us all. Lets remember WAR IS OVER if you want it. Its up to us and nobody else. John would have wanted to say that”.
Cativa ani mai tarziu dupa aceasta campanie, cei doi au lansat campania “War is over ! If you want it – Happy Christmas fron John and Yoko”, promovat pe billboard-uri (panouri) uriase montate in 12 orase din intreaga lume printre care Londra, Paris, Tokio, Roma, New York, Athena s.a. pe care au fost lipite visualuri alb/negru cu mesajul: “The war is over. If you want to-Happy Christmas from John & Yoko”.
Happy Christmas Kyoko
Happy Christmas Julian
So is Christmas
And what have you done
Another year over
And a new one just begun
And so this is Christmas
I hope you have fun
The near and the dear ones
The old and the young.
A very merry Christmas
And a happy New Year
Let’s hope it’s good one
Without any fear.
And so is Christmas (War is over)
For weak and for strong (If you want it)
For rich and the poor ones (War is over)
The road is so long (Now)
And so Happy Christmas (War is over)
For black and for white (If you want it)
For yellow and red ones (War is over)
Let’s stop all fight (Now)
A very merry Christmas
And a happy New Year
Let’s hope it’s good one
Without any fear
So this is Christmas (War is over)
And what have we done (If you wand it)
Another year over (War is over)
We hope you have fun (If you want it)
The near and the dear one (War is over)
The old and the young (Now).
A very merry Christmas
And a happy New Year
Let’s hope it’s a good one
Without any fear
War is over if you want it
War is over now.
Imagine there’s no heaven
It’s easy if you try
No hell below us
Above us only sky
Imagine all the people living for today
Imagine there’s no countries
It isn’t hard to do
Nothing to kill or die for
And no religion too
Imagine all the people living life in peace
You, you may say
I’m a dreamer, but I’m not the only one
I hope some day you’ll join us
And the world will be as one.
Imagine no possessions
I wonder if you can
No need for greed or hunger
A brotherhood of man
Imagine all the people sharing all the world
You, You may say it
I’m a dreamer but I’m not the only one
I hope some day you’ll join us
And the world will live as one.
”All we are saying is give peace a chance” (Tot ce vrem sa spunem este sa dam pacii o sansa) sau “ I don’t believe in killing whatever the reason”. (Nu cred in crime, indiferent de motiv) sau “If everyone demanded peace instead of another television set, then there’d be peace” (Daca lumea ar cere pace in loc de un alt televizor, atunci ar fi pace). John a stiut sa sintetizeze crezurile si opiniile sale in sloganuri care aveau menirea sa influenteze masele si sa genereze miscari sociale. Artistul a primit rezidenta permanenta in America abia in 1976, cand presedinte era Jimmy Carter.
In 1968, Phil Ochs lansa cantecul “The war is over”,
